The engineer provides support for all aspects of the various University data center facilities and communications closets. The engineer works with other staff including application development and security.
This position may require occasional evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
Essential Functions
Configures network switches, VPNs, optical hardware, and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) systems to optimize performance and security across the network infrastructure.
Conducts research on emerging technologies to support data, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), conferencing systems, and WiFi, providing insights and recommendations for future technology adoption.
Deploys wireless network infrastructures and provides recommendations for system enhancements to ensure optimal operation and coverage across campus.
Recommends IT solutions to address business and management challenges, leveraging technical expertise to enhance operational efficiency and meet organizational needs.
Provides support for the university’s building management systems, collaborating with stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and functionality.
Acts as a functional expert, planning and executing major aspects/components of projects, and providing technical guidance and expertise to team members to ensure successful project delivery.

Monitors network usage and security issues, proactively identifying and mitigating potential threats to network infrastructure and data integrity.
Deploys patches to mitigate any threats to systems, ensuring timely updates to protect against vulnerabilities and maintain system security.
Responds to issues affecting the network architecture, diagnosing and resolving technical issues promptly to minimize downtime and maintain network reliability.
Supports ticket resolution associated with the network architecture, providing technical expertise and assistance to resolve issues and ensure timely resolution.
Contributes to evaluating resource requirements for projects, reviewing and validating data, and making recommendations to optimize resource allocation and utilization.
Communicates project status, progress, and impact to management, and resolve issues in a timely manner to minimize disruptions and ensure project success.
Participates in weekend coverage as needed to support network operations and maintenance activities, ensuring continuous availability and reliability of network services.
Identifies critical success factors for test plans, ensuring comprehensive testing and validation of network solutions to mitigate risks and ensure reliability.
Stays informed of current industry trends and best practices, applying knowledge to enhance network infrastructure and support strategic decision-making.
Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
Experience with Routers, switches, hubs, access points, modems, and gateways.
Experience using Diagram tools such as lucidChart and Visio.
Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills
Working knowledge of network architectures such as WAN, LAN, VLAN, and WLAN.
Working knowledge of Routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, RIP, and EIGRP.
Familiarity with security standards like SSL/TLS, SSH, and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)..
Understanding of cabling for various applications such as Ethernet, fiber optics and coaxial.
Ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues using tools like packet analyzers, Wireshark, and network monitoring software.
Familiarity with network management tools such as SolarWinds, WUG.
Knowledge of IP Addressing and Subnetting
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of network test equipment.
Working knowledge of wide area communications using optical systems
Ability to handle sensitive organizational issues with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality
Working knowledge of Optical systems (Passive and active DWDM); VoIP and other real time applications; SDN; Laser and long haul rf systems; Firewalls and VPN
Experience Supporting complex systems architectures, specifications and applications
Resource acquisition and management
Execution of project plans and delivery of results
Analytical/problem solving and technical skills
Customer service experience
Ability to interact professionally with staff, faculty and students
Work experience and validated training with IT certification will be considered.
